
A fire at a mine(矿井) in north-eastern China has killed 21 people, and one person is still missing, according to a report. The fire began on Friday at the coal mine run by a company in Jixi City, Heilongjiang province. There are a lot of coal mines in north-eastern China. It earlier reported that some of the workers got out of the mine, but 22 people were still underground. The reason of the fire was not known.
China has the world’s most dangerous mines, with hundreds of mine workers killed in accidents every year. But the country’s safety has improved in recent years as the government takes strict laws. miners are working in a better condition and getting better paid now.
A total of 38 miners were underground when the fire started, but 16 of them managed to got out, Xinhua says. The local government says the fire is now under control. Last year, 24 people were killed and 54 injured in an underground fire at a mine in China’s north-eastern Liaoning province.
