A turtle in Thailand that had an operation(手术) to take nearly 1,000 coins out of her stomach two weeks ago has died. Omsin’s death caused a national-wide sadness.
Named Omsin, meaning “Piggy Bank”, she was found to be eating coins thrown into a public pond where she lived. The coins were thrown into the pond by visitors hoping for good luck. By the time they were taken out, she was carrying 5kg of coins. The unusual weight of metal had cracked her shell, making the seven-hour operation necessary.
She was said to have been doing well after the first surgery but developed blood poisoning(中毒) at the weekend. The 25-year-old sea turtle fell into a coma(昏迷) and never woke up after a second operation to cure blood poisoning. Even after she got into a coma, the doctors were trying to save her.
Doctors said the first operation had helped create a space in Omsin’s stomach that had probably stopped the flow of blood in her stomach. But the coins have poisoned her blood and thus caused her death.
