The China Charity Federation began a charity program in February, 2011. Its purpose is to help the children from poor families with congenital heart disease. And now 17 provinces and cities, along with several companies, have taken part in this program to help more poor children and families.
Chance for children to get the congenital heart disease in Tibet is 10 times higher than other parts of China, because of the elevation. It is reported that more than 10,000 children are suffering from the disease in Tibet. However, few families can afford the cost of treatment. Happily, since 2011, more than 4,000 Tibetan children with congenital heart disease have received free treatment with the help of The China Charity Federation. "We are hoping to bring a happy childhood to the children and to help more families in the area," one of the workers in the program said. Another worker told us that their company are planning to offer free treatment to 100 Tibetan children each year.
Zhoima, a ten-year-old girl, had a successful surgery in Shanghai two years ago. She is now fully recovered. She is excited about the changes since her treatment. "In the worst time, I could hardly walk and talk, but now I can jump and sing out aloud," she said. "I'm so grateful to the doctors and everyone who helped me and my family in Shanghai. I hope I can be a doctor too some day."
