阿克苏：种核桃让农民致富

Saypidin Yasin said planting and selling walnuts(核桃) has changed his life in Xinjiang. He used to take part-time jobs to raise his family of four in Yalhuz Terak village, Aksu. Though he worked hard, he could only made was about 10,000 yuan ($1,544) every year.

He learned that many of his neighbors had made big money by planting walnuts, and he decided to give it a try. In 2015, he planted 0.3 hectares of walnuts, and he got 900 kilos of the walnuts in 2019. He made 15,000 yuan by selling them.

Walnuts, apples and red dates are Aksu’s most famous fruit. For many years, the fruit and nuts have been sold worldwide and have brought wealth to the local people. A main fruit production center in China, Aksu owns long days of sunlight and large temperature differences between day and night, which helps fruit have more sugar and gives it a sweeter, more pleasant taste.

In the past, farmers mainly planted fruit according to their own knowledge. But these days from time to time the local government sends technicians(技术员) to give training classes on farm. Abduwali Abdurahman has planted walnuts for seven years. After learning these skills, he was able to get more walnuts, and his money from selling walnuts grew from 17,000 yuan in 2019 to about 30,000 yuan last year.
