寒门贵子庞众望 自强不息破偏见
A recent interview with Pang Zhongwang, a student from Tsinghua University, has become very popular online. The hashtag “#Getting First SCI Paper While Showering” has been viewed over one hundred million times on social media.
Pang Zhongwang was born in February 1999. When he was young, he helped take care of his home and his mother. Even though it was not easy, he never gave up and worked very hard. The walls of his house were full of awards from his primary school to high school. He wrote in his diary, “Since hardship chose you, you can leave it behind and embrace (拥抱) the sunshine.” With this belief, he did very well in high school and scored 684 on his college entrance exam (gao kao) in 2017, winning a place at Tsinghua University.
Now, seven years later, Pang is a Ph.D. student at Tsinghua University. He has received many scholarships (奖学金) and awards. Many people offered him money to help, but Pang politely said no because his school supported him well.
When Pang first entered Tsinghua, he felt pressured to do well, but his teachers and classmates helped him feel better. A teacher, Shi Zongkai, told him, “The most important task at Tsinghua is to discover and develop yourself.” This helped Pang focus on what he loves and is good at.
After receiving his bachelor’s degree in 2021, Pang continued his studies at Tsinghua for his Ph.D. One night while taking a shower, he suddenly solved a difficult problem in his research, leading to his first SCI paper. He has since won his first invention patent (专利) and published many papers.
Pang’s mother, who always taught him to be optimistic, passed away in 2020. “She would often say, ‘Look forward.”’ Pang said, “She smiled every day; why should I be sad?” From helping his family as a child to achieving great success in school, Pang has shown that he can shine brightly in everything he does!
