完胜!郑钦文晋级美网女单16强

Last year’s quarterfinalist and this year’s popular youngster, Zheng Qinwen from China, showed her strong skills in a powerful win in the third round of the 2024 US Open on Friday. The 21-year-old downed German Jule Niemeier, 6-2, 6-1, to push into Round 4.

It’s old news by this point in the season: Zheng has been getting a lot of attention. She was named the 2022 WTA Newcomer of the Year and the 2023 WTA Most Improved Player. She proved she deserves the attention by reaching the Melbourne final earlier this year and winning a singles gold medal at the Paris Olympic Games. Now she’s back into the fourth round in Flushing Meadows, making efforts to improve upon her quarterfinal result from last year.

The first set of the match opened neck-and-neck, with many people in the crowd cheering for Zheng. They shouted “Jiayou!” which Zheng said means “Come on!” in English. The first break of the set didn’t come until the sixth game, when Zheng cracked Niemeier to take control at 4-2.  At a crucial moment, Zheng Qinwen showed her breaking ability and successfully win the first set by 6-2. Zheng’s dominance became visible and noticeable in the second set. With zero breaks of serve and winning 26 points to Neimeier’s 11, she made it look quick and easy. The crowd cheered as Zheng won the match.

Zheng has now booked a fourth-round date with the winner between No. 24 Croatian Donna Vekic and American Peyton Stearns. “For me it’s just another match to go. It doesn’t matter who I go against,” said Zheng, looking forward. “I will be prepared.”
