June 11 of 2024 was the first-ever International Day of Play. On March 26, 2024, the United Nations decided to create a day on which to honor play around the world.
____1____ It’s a very important part of their development. Play encourages them to be physically active, which is healthy. Play also helps to improve children’s friendships and social skills. ____2____ And through play, kids can increase their creativity and imagination. All of these benefits (好处) are important. They help kids develop better.
What’s more, play-based learning in school is more interesting. ____3____ And it helps them remember information.
But four out of five children say that the adults around them don’t think playing is important. That statistic comes from a survey done in 2023 by YouGov and the Child & Youth Friendly Governance Project. ____4____
Now, some organizations are emphasizing (强调) the importance of play. They worked together to campaign (从事运动) for an International Day of Play. ____5____ Susan McIsaac is its president and CEO. “Play is powerful,” McIsaac says. “Through play, children explore and understand the world.”
