热爱摄影的女人用镜头创造自己的事业

On the walls of airport rail links and subway lines in Beijing, there are thousands of attractive photos. The over 1,000 photos are taken by a single person: talented photographer Wang Wenyan, whose pen name is Qiubi. Her photos cover a range of subjects — from documentary work and amazing landscape pictures to Antarctica wildlife photographs and astronomy images. All shows her broad interests and a lady of many gifts. Qiubi said she is mainly a documentary and Antarctica photographer, and taking photos of astronomy is more like a hobby for her.

Qiubi was born in 1987 in Fujian province. When she was in university, she got her first camera as a gift from her father. In 2008, after graduating from university, she used the camera to take photos for working. At work, she met her future husband. They married and moved to Beijing. In 2013, during an outing with friends in the capital, she captured moments of her friends’ children with her camera. That’s when she discovered her passion for photography.

The photos brought her first commercial photography commission and more commissions followed. She gradually became a full-time commercial photographer. “My focus was not on typical commercial portraits but on capturing documentary-style family moments,” she said. Her distinct style began to attract more attention. In 2014, she was invited to document an environmental project in a village at the base of the Qilian Mountains in Gansu province. The project succeeded and she received more commissions from various companies, organizations and universities. These projects, involving a wide range of fields, have brought her to remote communities in China and abroad.

Qiubi developed a passion for documenting the stories of grassroots communities and their residents while working on these projects. Before taking photos, she would first communicate with people, spend time getting to know them and take part in their daily lives. She immerses herself in their stories before capturing them. “At first, I tried to build an emotional connection with my subjects,” she said. “My gender has often been one of my advantages.”

Aside from her rural journeys, Qiubi has also been working on polar explorations in Antarctica.
