On October 22nd, 2024, Huawei Technologies launched its latest version of HarmonyOS (HarmonyOS 5.0), which was called HarmonyOS Next during testing. It moves away from its Android roots and has been dubbed “pure blood” HarmonyOS. Huawei first introduced HarmonyOS as an alternative to Android in China in August 2019. At first, HarmonyOS worked with Android apps because their core systems were similar. But this changed with HarmonyOS Next.
HarmonyOS Next now has 15,000 native applications and services. The number is ten times more than in June when Huawei released a beta version (测试版本) of HarmonyOS Next. “We created something new in just one year that other countries have been working on for over ten years,” Richard Yu Chengdong, chairman of Huawei’s consumer business group said.
Huawei started public testing of HarmonyOS 5.0 on Tuesday with the Pura 70 and Pocket 2 phones and the MatePad Pro tablet. The operating system works on Huawei’s Mate 60 series, the Mate X5 foldable phone and the 13.2-inch MatePad Pro tablet. It will be available in more phones and tablets, including its latest trifold Mate XT phone and mid-range Nova models. But Huawei didn’t talk about the upcoming Mate 70 series. The company said the Mate 70 will come out in the fourth quarter, when HarmonyOS 5.0 will be ready for regular use.
Huawei is looking to expanding the adoption of HarmonyOS and is working with big Chinese tech companies to develop native apps for the ecosystem. On Tuesday, it also announced a plan to reward developers who qualify with up to 1 million yuan in cash and lots of publicity.
Last year, when the Mate 60 series came out, more people started using HarmonyOS. Sales of Huawei’s flagship phones went up by 71% in the first three quarters of compared to last year (2023). The Pura 70 series, released in late April, sold 154% higher more than the previous generation in the second and third quarters. HarmonyOS made the second most used mobile operating system in mainland China, according to a report. While Android still leads China’s mobile market with 68% and iOS has a slightly less at 16%.
