    Xiao Ma is 31 years old. He travels through China with his mother, carrying her on his back just like she did with him when he was a baby. He even makes short videos of their trips and shares them on Douyin.

    Xiao Ma was only eight when his mother had a terrible car accident. She couldn’t move anymore because of the accident. Later, doctors said she had brain problems. When he grew up, Xiao Ma did many jobs, like picking cotton and being an apprentice (学徒). He also opened a restaurant in Xinjiang. Most of his money went to help his mother get better.

    A few years ago, Xiao Ma’s mother’s condition was getting worse. So he decided to spend more time with her by traveling around China. Xiao Ma sold his house and car so he could take his mother on trips. They visited places like Tianshan Mountain, Tianchi Lake, Beijing’s Tiananmen Square and the Great Wall. Even though his mother can’t talk now, she always smiles when they travel. Xiao Ma says it makes her happy, and that’s enough for him.

    “Home is where my mother is,” Xiao Ma said when asked when he plans to return home, adding that he didn’t want to live with regrets regarding his mother’s final years on this Earth.
