Famous Chinese video influencer Li Ziqi restarted posting online with two new videos on Tuesday afternoon. One newly uploaded video showed how she made a cloakroom (衣帽间), and the other, themed around China’s intangible cultural heritage “lacquerware (漆器),” vividly shows the beauty of Chinese lacquerware. The videos quickly became the top trending topic online. Many netizens have flooded the comment area with messages of support and expressed how much they missed her content under her videos.
Li’s early life was marked by hardship as her parents divorced when she was young, leading her to live with her grandparents. Her grandfather played a significant role in nurturing her passion for cooking since he used to cook in local ceremonies in the village. When she was in fifth grade, her grandfather died and her grandmother began raising her on her own, making life harder. In 2004, she moved to the city to work and enhance the living standard of her family. She worked there for about 7 to 8 years. Due to the sudden health issues of her grandmother, she returned to her hometown.
However, Li always had a thought of improving the living standard of her family. So, she decided to do something new. She made videos of her everyday traditional cooking as well as artistic works. Though it was not a success at first, it sprang to gain pace afterwards. Later, she gained a fan following from all around the world due to her pleasant videos with relaxing background music, featuring poetic portrayals of rural life, traditional cooking techniques, and cultural practices. In 2020, Li set a Guinness World Record for the most subscribers on a Chinese-language YouTube channel, with a total of 11.4 million followers at the time.
Although she hasn’t posted any new content since July 14, 2021, the number of her followers has continued to rise, and fans have been eagerly asking for new videos during her absence.
