Li Ziqi, born in 1990 in Sichuan Province, began posting videos in 2015. She has more than 55 million followers on Douyin and more than 20 million subscribers on YouTube, making her one of the very few Chinese content creators who are influential both on the Chinese Internet and overseas.
Her videos consist of herself cooking traditional Chinese dishes, farming, doing handicrafts, and living a peaceful lifestyle. Besides showing cooking techniques, some videos showed the entire process of how a crop is grown, harvested and prepared. The rest help viewers discover a new way to immerse themselves in the wonder of Chinese culture and learn local handicraft styles.
Li peacefully hangs persimmons (柿子) to dry in the sun, carefully assembles flower arrangements, and rides horseback through a misty forest, all without the presence of smart phones or other modern technology. Images of her doing chores — such as feeding animals, preparing a meal for her grandmother or making silk clothes — are picture-perfect. The slow pace and soothing music are also impeccable. Fans love the ideal version of rural life and the poetic and exquisite portrayal (描绘) of Chinese culture that Li presents.
As her videos turn more popular, Li became an unofficial cultural ambassador of sorts for China. People’s Daily reported that her new video which focuses on Chinese traditional lacquer-making techniques would “further promote the international communication of Chinese traditional culture.” “Her videos show the self-sufficiency and perseverance of the Chinese nation. This kind of perspective is very unique. It shows Asian charm, aesthetics (美学) and spirit through a young person’s everyday life,” said Zhang Yiwu, a cultural professor at Peking University. “But what is more noteworthy is how this young woman’s perspective has established a spiritual connection among young people around the world, crossing cultural barriers with her Chinese storytelling.”
