君臣皆称美布,实则空无一物


    Many years ago, there was an Emperor who loved beautiful clothes. One day, two cheaters promised to make the most beautiful cloth ever. They said those who were unfit for their job or foolish couldn’t see the cloth. The Emperor was interested in it, and he paid them a lot of money to start their work.

    The two cheaters set up two looms (织布机) and pretended to work. Curious about the progress, the Emperor sent an honest old minister (大臣) to check on the work. “He is honest and reliable,” thought the Emperor, “and will tell me how the cloth looks.”

    The minister arrived and saw nothing on the looms. “Can I be a fool?” he wondered. “Or am I not fit to be the minister?” To keep his job, he praised the invisible cloth, saying, “It’s beautiful!” The cheaters then asked for more money, silk, and gold thread.

    The Emperor sent another honest official to see the cloth. But he also saw nothing and, not wanting to appear foolish, he praised the cloth, too.

    News of the beautiful cloth spread throughout the town. Finally, the Emperor decided to see it himself...
