大雪:节令风催冷,云携白絮扬

Major Snow is the 21st solar term of the 24 traditional Chinese solar terms. During this time, snow gets heavier and starts to pile up on the ground. The temperature really drops.

In North China, the snow can fall all day, breaking tree branches and blocking roads. It feels like “hundreds of leagues ice-bound go; over thousands of leagues flies snow”. In the south, snowflakes (雪花) fall and everything turns white.
During Major Snow, Chinese people love lamb. It is great for warming up the body, improving blood circulation (血液循环), and keeping out the cold. In Chongqing, people enjoy potted lamb soup or stewed lamb soup with family and friends. In Nanjing, people prefer stewed lamb with yams (山药) or wolfberries (枸杞子).
People also eat red bean porridge during Major Snow. Hot porridge can help warm you up and nourish your body in cold weather. The custom is to eat red bean porridge on the first day of Major Snow and eight-treasure porridge on the eighth day of the last month of the lunar year.
During this period, people should pay special attention to their body health since it’s easy to get ill. People can wear a warm scarf to protect their necks. It’s drier and colder during Major Snow, so people should drink more warm water. But do not drink too much at once and avoid drinking cold water after exercising.
