    Bian Que (407BC - 310 BC) was a famous doctor in ancient China. His real name was Qin Yueren. He was very good at diagnosing (诊断) diseases, curing patients, and even saving people who were close to death, just like the legendary god doctor Bian Que before his times. Because of this, people started calling him Bian Que. Over time, most people forgot his real name, Qin Yuren. There are many stories about him. Let’s read one of them.

    When Bian Que was young, he ran an inn (客栈). An older guest named Chang Sangjun noticed Bian Que’s good qualities and wanted to teach him medicine. Chang Sangjun said he would share his medical secrets with Bian Que if he promised not to tell anyone else. Bian Que agreed, so Chang Sangjun gave him a book and some herbs (药草). He told Bian Que to take the herbs with a special liquid every day for 30 days. After giving these instructions, Chang Sangjun disappeared.

    Bian Que followed the instructions carefully. After 30 days, he found that he could understand the secrets of nature and even gained a special talent. He could see through people’s bodies. He wisely kept this ability a secret and used it to help patients by feeling their pulse.
