James and Louie Pendley are brothers. They were going to see a friend when they saw smoke. “We saw smoke and decided to check it out,” Louie said. They drove towards the smoke and found a neighborhood on fire.
When they arrived, people were trying to stop the fire with hoses (水管). The fire was spreading fast, covering trees and fences. The situation was scary. “Planes and helicopters flew over, but no water came down to help us,” James remembered. The brothers kept helping for two hours. “We thought, ‘If it were us, we’d want someone to help,’” Louie said.
Neighbors were touched by the brothers’ actions. After firefighters arrived, Kathy Battisti thanked them. “I wondered who they were,” she said. “It let me know that strangers are ready to help.” Another neighbor agreed, saying, “These guys did so much.”
