A long time ago, the Jade Emperor’s favorite bird was killed (弄死) by some people in a village. He got very angry and wanted to burn the village on the fifteenth day of the lunar year (农历年). The Jade Emperor’s daughter felt sad about this plan. She told the villagers about her father’s idea. The villagers didn’t know what to do. Then, a man had an idea. He suggested putting up red lanterns to make it look like the village was already on fire. The Jade Emperor saw the red lanterns and thought the village was burning. Since then, people have been putting up red lanterns every year on that day to remember the story.
