周处斗虎斩蛟除三害 陆云勉志励行成一才

During the Jin Dynasty, there lived a man named Zhou Chu in Yixing. He was known for his love for fighting when he was young, making him a big problem in the county. At that time, there was a ferocious (凶猛的) dragon in the river and a fierce tiger in the mountains of Yixing. They often hurt and ate people, so people saw them as the “three evils” along with Zhou Chu. Among them, Zhou Chu caused the most harm.

Later, someone suggested that Zhou Chu should go to the mountain to kill the wild tiger and to the river to behead the fierce dragon, hoping to get rid of two evils and leave only one. Zhou Chu went to the mountain alone and indeed killed the tiger. Then he jumped into the river and fought with the dragon. The evil dragon moved up and down, diving deep with Zhou Chu chasing closely after it. After three days and nights, everyone thought that Zhou Chu had died. They were happy and celebrated. To their surprise, Zhou Chu had actually killed the dragon and returned.

When Zhou Chu heard that his fellow townspeople celebrated his death, he realized that he was considered one of the evils of Yixing. So, he decided to change. He went to Wu prefecture to seek advice from the famous brothers, Lu Ji and Lu Yun.

Zhou Chu told Lu Yun the truth and expressed his wish to correct his mistakes and start over, but he was worried that he was too old to make a difference. Lu Yun encouraged him by saying, “The ancients would be happy even if they came to thoroughly understand the truth in the early morning but died at night, let alone you with a promising future. Besides, for a man, the scary thing is to have no ambition. Why worry about not achieving anything?”

From then on, Zhou Chu quickly and completely changed his ways and made efforts to improve himself. The story of “Chou Chu Getting Rid of the Evils” has been passed down to this day.
