Cao Cao had bad headaches, and Hua Tuo used acupuncture (针灸) to help him feel better. Later, after Cao Cao had taken personal control of the affairs of the state, his headaches got worse and happened more often. Hua Tuo told Cao Cao that he needed long treatments, so Hua Tuo came to treat Cao Cao exclusively (专有地). After being away from home for a long time, Hua Tuo wanted to go back for a short visit, and Cao Cao agreed.
When Hua Tuo arrived home, he delayed going back to Cao Cao and said his wife was sick. Cao Cao sent many letters asking him to return, but Hua Tuo still delayed going back. Cao Cao sent people to check if Hua Tuo’s wife was really sick. If she was, they would let Hua Tuo come back later. If Hua Tuo lied, he would be arrested and brought back by force. Finally, Hua Tuo was put in prison and admitted he was lying.
Xun Yu, an advisor to Cao Cao, asked him to spare Hua Tuo because his skills could save many lives. But Cao Cao did not listen and ordered Hua Tuo to be killed. Legend has it that Hua Tuo gave his book of medical techniques to a prison official before he was killed. However, this official burned the book to avoid getting into trouble.
