Gu Jinling, a 12-year-old girl from Beijing, has risen to fame as a social media influencer, boasting over 2.5 million followers who are attracted by her unique Chinese-style costume dances.
In her videos, Gu imitates the flying figures depicted in Dunhuang murals, portrays themes inspired by Tang Dynasty (618-907) figurines, and draws from the Chu Ci from the Warring States Period (475-221 BC), using Chinese classical dance to breathe life into legends. Viewers are attracted by her beautiful costumes, amazing visuals, and the rich atmosphere of classical culture in her performances. Additionally, they are amazed by her remarkable dance skills at such a young age.
Gu started dancing at 3 and has been practicing for nearly ten years. She tried calligraphy and played the piano, cello, and guitar, but none of them interested her. Finally, she realized that dancing was what truly made her happy. Gu first trained in ballet but began learning Chinese classical dance at 6 because she found its costumes were more beautiful than those of ballet.
Classical dance is deeply rooted in rich cultural heritage. To perform it well, one must understand and appreciate various aspects of traditional Chinese culture. Gu’s home is filled with books on Chinese murals, which she studies to imitate the expressions and gestures. When visiting different cities, she often tours museums, closely observing the details of ancient dance figurines. For Gu, paying attention to detail is crucial for capturing the essence of ancient Chinese style.
However, growing from a child to an adolescent brings new challenges for her. A child’s body is naturally more flexible, and movements that were once easy for her now require more effort and practice. Since last year, Gu has spent more time mastering basic dance techniques. Despite her busy schedule, Gu doesn’t feel mentally tired or unbalanced. “I chose dance. The better I dance, the happier I am,” said Gu.
