Drinking baijiu is a huge part of Chinese culture. Chinese baijiu has a history of thousands of years. If you’re visiting China, knowing how to drink is important. Here are some tips:
The Host Starts: They start with a welcome toast (敬酒). Don’t jump in! After, you can toast people around you, then the host, either one-on-one or all together.
Toasting: When you toast, say something nice — like thanks, friendship, or looking forward to a bright future. Hold your glass in your right hand. If you toast someone older or more important, lower your glass a bit to show respect.
Late? Punishment! If you’re late, down three glasses in a row. This helps you catch up.
Respect the Toast: Not drinking when toasted is rude. How much you drink shows respect. Finishing your glass is a big respect move.
Warm tips:
Can’t handle baijiu? Tell the host before or ask for beer or other drinks.
Chinese dinners and drinking go on for hours. Snack and sip soup between drinks to keep up.
Feeling tipsy (微醺的)? Switch to tea. It’s common to do this, and it’s called “yi cha dai jiu” in Chinese.
