    Once upon a time, a farmer planted rice. Every day, he went to the field to watch the plants grow. He saw them come out of the ground and get taller. But he thought they were growing too slowly. Finally, he became impatient with them.

    “How can I make them grow faster?” the farmer wondered at night and couldn’t sleep. Then he had an idea. Without waiting for morning, he rushed to the field in the moonlight (月光). He pulled up the young plants by half an inch (英寸). By morning, he had finished the work and felt proud. “Look how much taller they are!” he said happily to himself. Then he went home and proudly told his son what he had done.

    The sun had come out. The farmer’s son was sad to see all the plants dying.
