On Friday, World Aquatics announced that China’s Quan Hongchan was named 2024 Female Diving Athletes of the Year.
At the Tokyo Olympics in 2021, Quan Hongchan amazed everyone with her “splash-less dive.” At the 2024 Paris Olympics, Quan and Chen Yuxi won gold medals in the women’s synchronized (同步) 10-meter platform, and Quan also won gold again in the individual event.
But during the three years before the Paris Olympics, Quan struggled because of physical growth. She said, “It was tough. My dives weren’t as good as before. When I dived, my hands weren’t even ready before I hit the water. I couldn’t dive like I used to.” To get better, her coach made her training harder and stronger. Quan worked out seven to eight hours every day. With her coach’s help, Quan got through the tough teenage years.
After the Paris Olympics, Quan took a short break. She visited her family and enjoyed lots of yummy food. In October last year, the Chinese diving team got back together. Quan had gained some weight and really wanted to lose it. “I run every day, then lift weights and swim. That’s my routine,” she said. Her head coach, Chen Ruolin, thought it might take more than six months for Quan to get back to her best.
A new Olympic cycle has started. The young girl who used to be naive has grown up and is aiming higher. Chen Ruolin also said they wouldn’t be as tough on Quan this time. “It depends on how aware she is. She’s grown up now. And she might start being rebellious soon, so we need to handle her differently.” As Quan grows, she understands diving better. “I think I can still work harder and become who I want to be.”
