小小的我,大大的世界

The movie “Big World” was released on December 27, 2024. It’s about a young man named Liu Chunhe who has cerebral palsy. During his summer vacation at age 20, he waits nervously for his college acceptance letter while searching for a part-time job. Like many others, he wonders about his future career, where to live, and who he wants to be.

Liu Chunhe dreams of being a teacher but faces rejection due to his disability. He finally lands a job at a café. At his interview, they ask how long he can stand and how far he can walk. In a crowded café, he impresses everyone by reciting the tongue twister “Baocaiming”, showing he’s capable despite his condition. His worried grandmother secretly watches this and is moved to tears.

In another part of the story, his grandmother, Chen Suqun, is preparing for a senior choir performance. Liu Chunhe, who struggles initially with even holding a drumstick, becomes their drummer. Since he was a baby, his grandmother has been his biggest supporter, encouraging him to chase his dreams. She’s like a shield protecting him from obstacles, giving him the strength and courage to keep going.

By the end of the film, Liu Chunhe achieves his goals: he learns to drive, gets accepted into his dream university, and is ready for a new chapter in life. He takes his grandmother to a countryside lake and promises that once he starts college, he’ll invite her to eat at the school cafeteria. He also vows to take her anywhere she wants to go and have fun together. Then he gently tells her, “From now on, let me walk this path alone, okay?” His grandmother smiles through her tears as she removes her scarf, a single tear rolling down her cheek.

“Big World” beautifully captures the everyday challenges and triumphs of people with cerebral palsy and their loved ones. It weaves their unique experiences into relatable moments—like how to hold a pen, write poetry, play an instrument, or navigate physical spaces.
