China is hosting a one-of-a-kind event on April 13, 2025 — the world’s first half-marathon where humans will race against human-like robots. The race will take place in Beijing’s Daxing District. About 12,000 human runners will join robots made by tech companies from around the world. This is the first time robots will try to finish the full 21km race.
To join the race, robots must:
1) Look like humans with two legs (no wheels allowed).
2) Be between 0.5 and 2 meters tall.
3) Work by remote control or by themselves.
4) Change batteries during the race if needed.
Robots are now being used more often in marathons. For example, last year at a half-marathon in Beijing, a human-like robot named “Tiangong” joined the race near the finish line. Its job was to help encourage tired runners to keep going. In another race in Beijing, a similar robot waited at the finish line. It cheered for the runners and even ran a little to show its abilities. Other countries are also making robots better. In South Korea, a robot named RAIBO2 once ran a full marathon (42km) in 4 hours without stopping.
Let’s look forward to the great event together!
