On Monday, a groundbreaking ship named AGOGO FPSO left Shanghai’s Changxing Island, marking a major step in green technology. Built by Shanghai Cosco Shipping Heavy Industry and supervised by Chongming Customs, this vessel is the world’s first floating oil-production ship equipped with carbon capture systems. It will work in Angola’s Agogo oilfield, combining energy production with environmental protection.
The AGOGO FPSO is massive — as long as three football fields (333 meters) and 60 meters wide. It can produce 120,000 barrels of crude oil (原油) daily and store up to 1.6 million barrels. But its real innovation lies in sustainability. Unlike regular oil ships, which release 20-30 kg of carbon dioxide per barrel, this ship captures carbon emissions during operation. It also turns waste heat from exhaust gases (废气) into electricity, cutting energy use. Experts estimate it will reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 230,000 tons yearly — equal to the carbon absorbed by 110,000 acres of forest.
Building such a ship required teamwork between companies and creative government support. Shanghai Customs introduced new rules to speed up production. For example, they allowed materials to move tax-free between two factories (COSCO and Huarun Dadong), saving over 60% of transportation time. Customs also let companies report material usage after production instead of before, making planning easier. “These policies helped us finish the project one month faster than planned,” said Xu Xiaohua, the project manager, setting a global record for ship upgrades.
Before the ship’s departure, customs officers ensured everything was ready. They supervised the loading of 4,200 tons of tax-free fuel, checked food and water safety for the crew, and quickly processed paperwork for 93 sailors. Strict checks guaranteed both human health and environmental standards.
As the world seeks cleaner energy solutions, the AGOGO FPSO shows how technology can reduce pollution in oil production. By capturing carbon and recycling waste heat, it proves that industries can protect the planet while meeting energy needs. This achievement highlights China’s growing role in green engineering and sets an example for global marine projects.
