The Chinese cartoon film, Ne Zha 2 has earned over 15 billion yuan at the box office. It beat the film Star Wars: The Force Awakens and became the fifth highest grossing (票房收入) film worldwide. After coming out during Chinese New Year, Ne Zha 2 broke many records in Asia and became the most popular cartoon film in the world.
The film’s success isn’t limited to China. Since February, Ne Zha 2 has been screened in the U.S., Canada, Australia, and New Zealand. On March 13, it reached Thailand and Malaysia, with a Thai-dubbed version (泰语配音版) winning local fans. The next day, it began its “European tour” in the UK and Ireland, with tickets selling out quickly. Future releases (公映) in France, Spain, Indonesia and Japan are planned.
On Rotten Tomatoes, a popular movie review website, it scored 100% from critics and 99% from viewers. Elizabeth Kerr, a film critic from The Hollywood Reporter, called it a “technical masterpiece” that is as good as Disney’s best works. Zhang Qingyun, a filmmaker in Canada, shared: “The animation is so detailed — you can even see the veins (血管) on Ne Zha’s arms! The story about family and friendship moved me deeply.”
The film has boosted cultural tourism. Many foreign tourists are coming to visit popular spots in China. Wanna, a Thai tourist visiting Chengdu recently, became deeply interested in Chinese culture after watching the film. “The film includes many Sichuan cultural elements. I plan to explore these places in depth, following the film’s locations,” she said.
Moreover, Ne Zha 2 has inspired a wave of products, from toys to books. A blind box series sold over 200,000 sets online within days. “Fans keep asking when new products will arrive,” said a store employee in Chengdu.
