Remember the sci-fi movie Real Steel starring Hugh Jackman as a struggling ex-boxer turned robot fighting coach? It was set in the “near future”, but who would have thought that we would really have robot fighting competitions just over ten years later? Just last week, Unitree, a robotics company in China’s Zhejiang Province, held a unique kickboxing competition, featuring its G1 model — a 130 cm tall, 35 kg robot.
The event saw four G1 robots battle. Wearing boxing gloves and headgear, they fought in three two-minute rounds. Points were given for hits to the head or body. They battled under the watchful eye of a human referee (裁判) who made sure they fought by the rules and broke them apart when they clinched for too long.
The G1 robots were controlled through remote control and voice commands by human controllers. In the final, a robot operated by tech influencer Lu Xin won. Though slower than Hollywood’s Real Steel fights, the event showed the G1’s balance and recovery skills. It was definitely a preview of things to come in the near future.
China is advancing fast in robotics. Earlier this year, it hosted the first humanoid robot marathon. Unitree’s event was only the first such competition, but another robot combat event has already been announced for December. For now, the G1’s boxing gloves are just the start.
