Zongzi is a traditional Chinese food eaten during the Dragon Boat Festival. Let’s learn how to make it step by step!
What You Need:
·Glutinous rice (soaked for 4 hours)
·Zongzi leaves (15-20 pieces, trimmed at the hard stems)
·Fillings (like red bean paste or cooked meat)
·Cotton string (soaked to soften)
Step 1: Prepare the Leaves
·Boil the leaves for 5-10 minutes to make them soft and clean.
·Soak them in cold water for 2 hours, then wash and dry.
Step 2: Fold the Leaves
·Take two leaves and place one on top of the other, with their smooth sides facing inside.
·Fold them into a cone (圆锥体) shape from the one-third point of the leaves.
·Press the bottom of the cone tightly to make sure there are no holes.
Step 3: Add Ingredients
·Fill the cone halfway with glutinous rice and press it gently.
·Add 1-2 spoons of filling.
·Cover the filling with more glutinous rice, leaving a little space at the top.
Step 4: Wrap the Zongzi
·Fold the top part of the leaves down to cover the rice and filling.
·Fold the two sides of the leaves toward the center to make a tight triangle shape.
·Tie the zongzi firmly with cotton string in a “cross” pattern to keep it from opening.
Step 5: Cook the Zongzi
·Place the zongzi in a large pot and cover with water.
·Cook sweet fillings for 2 hours and savory fillings for 2.5-3 hours.
·Check the water level often and add more hot water if needed.
Final Step: Enjoy!
