Recently, a businessman named Tong Pengfei in Meishan, Sichuan, started a special activity where people can pay 9.9 yuan to “steal” a sugarcane (甘蔗) from his field.
This idea was actually suggested by Tong Pengfei’s wife, Xu Xinyao, after she saw a fun video online about people “stealing” sugarcanes. Tong set up a sign in the field saying, “Self-Service Sugarcane Stealing — 9.9 yuan each,” and made it clear that it was just a game — everyone must pay for what they cut.
At first, Tong tried to catch the “thieves”, but it was hard work and he caught almost no one. Then, he hired some villagers and even used dogs as NPCs (非玩家角色) to help catch people. Still, most visitors easily took the sugarcane away. As more people came, Tong added more NPCs and used tools like a thermal imager (热成像仪). However, he always told the catchers not to run too fast or scare the visitors. He explained that the goal was to help people feel the joy and excitement of childhood, not to really catch them.
