平安夜同庆!各国独特习俗大赏

Christmas Eve is celebrated on December 24th in many countries, but people enjoy it in very different ways.
In Poland, families share a special dinner called Wigilia. They start the meal when they see the first star in the sky. During dinner, they break and share a thin wafer called opłatek. Family members break pieces from each other’s wafers and wish each other well for the new year. They also leave one empty chair at the table, ready to welcome a surprise guest.
In Italy and in Italian-American families, many people do not eat meat on Christmas Eve. Instead, they have a large seafood meal known as the Feast of the Seven Fishes.
Iceland has a sweet tradition called Jólabókaflód, or the “Christmas Book Flood.” On Christmas Eve, people give books as gifts. Then, everyone spends a quiet evening reading their new books, often with a cup of hot chocolate.
In Japan, a fun custom has become popular: eating KFC on Christmas Eve! Because of a famous advertisement long ago, many families now order fried chicken meals for their holiday dinner, often months in advance.
Christmas Eve is a special night full of unique traditions across the globe.
