A much-loved teacher has made her name in history. Glenda Akin from Westmoreland High School in Tennessee got a Guinness World Record for being the female teacher with the longest career at the same school — she worked there for an amazing 61 years and 43 days!
Now 84 years old, Akin spent more than 60 years at the school. She first worked as a teacher and later took on the role of the school librarian. Generations of students sat in her classroom, and many of them said her passion for teaching and steady care had a lasting influence on their lives. In an interview, Akin shared that she truly loved her job and never felt bored about getting up early to go to school every day.
For Akin, the school was more than just a workplace — it became her warm home. When her family members passed away, the school community stepped in to fill that empty space. In her own words, they “more or less became my family”. What’s even more touching is that she watched one of her students grow up, come back to teach at the same school, and even retire a full 10 years before she did.
