Recently, researchers from the Flower Research Institute of Yunnan Academy of Agricultural Sciences launched an online campaign to name a new yellow Chinese rose. They asked for suggestions from the public. Soon, the comments were flooded with the same name: “Wenxiu”. Tens of thousands of people supported naming the rose after Huang Wenxiu, a young woman who devoted her life to helping others.
Huang Wenxiu was a village official in Guangxi. After finishing her studies, she chose to return to her hometown instead of working in a big city. She worked hard to help local families out of poverty. Sadly, she lost her life in a flood in June 2019 while returning to the village. She was only 30 years old then. Many people were deeply moved by her story. In 2019, she was honored as a national role model for her dedication.
The research team agreed to the name “Wenxiu Rose”. They said Huang Wenxiu was a great woman and a role model. The rose is still being tested. If it meets all the standards, it will officially be named after her. The team also plans to name more roses after excellent women in different fields.
In the same naming activity, another Chinese rose was called “Baohua”. This common Chinese name came from an online user to honor an ordinary person. The researchers liked the idea because roses are meant to belong to everyone.
