You may not have listened to the most well-known albums in history, but you have probably seen their cover art. Think of The Beatles’ Abbey Road, Pink Floyd’s Dark Side of the Moon, or Fleetwood Mac’s Rumors. Album covers do more than just hold the music—they give it a visual identity and capture its spirit. In fact, they are often considered works of art themselves. To honor this creative work, the Grammy Awards have introduced a new category called Best Album Cover, with the first winner to be announced at the 2026 ceremony.
This award does not go to the performer. Instead, it is given to the art directors who create the album cover. Interestingly, four of the five nominees this year are musicians who also worked as art directors for their own albums.
The five nominees for the first Grammy Best Album Cover are: Bad Bunny’s Debí Tirar Más Fotos, for which the singer served as art director; Tyler, the Creator’s Chromakopia, creatively directed by the artist himself; DJO’s The Crux, with art direction by singer Joe Kerry and his team; Wet Leg’s Moisturizer, designed by singer Rhian Teasdale along with a photographer and a visual artist; and Perfume Genius’s Glory, led by visual artist Cody Critcheloe and creative director Andrew J.S.
According to the Grammy Awards, cover art has always been an important visual part of the album experience. From photo shoots and creative design to the choice of colors and fonts, the artwork adds another layer to the music. This new award is different from the Best Recording Package category, which considers all physical materials of an album. Harvey Mason jr., CEO of the Recording Academy, noted that in today’s digital world, album covers may be more influential than ever.
The 2026 Grammy Awards will take place on Sunday, February 1, at the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles. The ceremony will be broadcast live on CBS and Paramount+, and updates can be followed on the Grammys’ official Instagram account.
