船行水墨间，心醉三峡里
The Three Gorges on the Yangtze River are world-famous. They are the most beautiful part of the Yangtze that ships can sail through. They form a series of natural and cultural attractions on the Yangtze Cruise between Chongqing and Yichang on the middle reaches of the Yangtze. There are three main gorges with their own features.
Qutang Gorge starts at Fengjie County in Chongqing, which is about 500 kilometers east of Chongqing City. It is famous for its steep cliffs that make the river look narrow.
Wu Gorge begins where Daning River joins the Yangtze at Wushan. It is about 40 kilometers long and ends at Wushan County Town. If you sail up the Daning River, you can see the Lesser Three Gorges and even the narrower Mini Three Gorges at the far end, which are both popular among tourists. Wu Gorge connects to Xiling Gorge at Badong County in Hubei Province.
Xiling Gorge is the longest among the three gorges. Shennong Stream here has clear water and interesting sights, drawing many tourists to take small boats to explore. Sanyou Cave, a famous spot on Xiling Gorge, is where three ancient poets once stayed and wrote poems, making it a special cultural attraction.
The Three Gorges were once dangerous for shipping because of the fast-flowing water. But great changes happened after the main project of the Three Gorges Dam was completed in 2006. After its construction, the river level rose. The river became calmer and easier to sail. Now cruise ships travel smoothly between Chongqing and Yichang, letting passengers enjoy the gorges’ beauty better during their trip.
