话说大寒:美食、习俗与乐趣

Major Cold is the last of the 24 solar terms. It usually falls on January 20 or 21. This period marks the end of winter and is often the coldest time, featuring snow, rain, and icy winds.

Food for Warmth
People eat special foods during Major Cold. In Beijing, many people eat a sweet rice cake called “dispelling cold cake”. Its name reminds people of “driving out the cold”, and it can keep people warm. In Anhui, families make fried spring rolls with meat or vegetables. In Nanjing, people like to drink hot chicken soup with healthy herbs. These foods help keep the body warm.

A Custom for Good Wishes
As this time is near the Lunar New Year, some people buy sesame straw. It is a symbol for a hope that life or studies will “rise higher and higher”, just like the sesame plant grows.

Time for Winter Fun
The very cold weather brings ice and snow. This is perfect for winter sports! People in China go outside to enjoy skating, skiing, and sledding during the Major Cold days.

In short, Major Cold is very cold, but it brings special traditions, warm food, and fun activities before the arrival of spring.
