Have you ever noticed that no two cities are exactly the same? Every city has buildings, roads, and parks, but they are arranged in unique ways. Many things shape a city — its geography, weather, culture, and people. Those who design cities are called urban (城市的) planners. Their job is to make sure everything in the city works well together and meets people’s needs.
Katherine Perez is an urban planner. She has loved cities since she was young, because each city is special for her. “Different communities face different challenges,” she says, “and that makes the work very interesting.”
Perez works for a company called Arup, which helps cities around the world design everything from sports stadiums to bridges. Over her 30-year career, she has seen the job of urban planning change a lot. Today, many projects focus on protecting the environment, such as finding ways to create energy without polluting the air. This was not a common goal when she first started.
