城市规划师:塑造独特城市的幕后使者

Have you ever noticed that no two cities are exactly the same? Every city has buildings, roads, and parks, but they are arranged in unique ways. Many things shape a city — its geography, weather, culture, and people. Those who design cities are called urban (城市的) planners. Their job is to make sure everything in the city works well together and meets people’s needs.

Katherine Perez is an urban planner. She has loved cities since she was young, because each city is special for her. “Different communities face different challenges,” she says, “and that makes the work very interesting.”

Perez works for a company called Arup, which helps cities around the world design everything from sports stadiums to bridges. Over her 30-year career, she has seen the job of urban planning change a lot. Today, many projects focus on protecting the environment, such as finding ways to create energy without polluting the air. This was not a common goal when she first started.

“Conditions are always changing, so you have to adjust (调整) at any time,” says Perez. Planners now use high-tech tools like virtual reality to design spaces. But one thing has not changed: it is still very important to listen to the people who live in the city. Planners must help communities turn big ideas into reality. Perez says the best part of her job is seeing how her work improves people’s lives — whether it’s a new park, a library, or turning an empty space into a lively place for the community.
