Many people adopt dogs and cats from animal shelters. Sometimes, these pets come from far away. In the warm British Virgin Islands, Vijay Bissoondutt runs the only animal shelter in the area. For 29 years, he has helped homeless animals from many islands.
Vijay and his team find animals that are lost or treated badly and bring them to the shelter. Last year, they built a bigger shelter. Now, it has space for 75 dogs and 19 cats to live comfortably. The animals enjoy more room to play and relax. Vijay takes care of them by feeding, playing, and exercising with them.
When someone wants to adopt, Vijay teaches them how to be a good owner. “Remember,” he says, “pets need plenty of water and shade because it’s so hot here.” He also tells owners that pets need yearly vaccinations (接种疫苗), healthy food, and regular check-ups at the vet. Exercise is important too — without it, a dog might feel bored and start chewing (啃咬) things.
Vijay believes working with animals is a job full of love. It isn’t easy, but it makes him happy. “The best reward is seeing a dog wag its tail happily,” he smiles. He advises young animal lovers to volunteer at local shelters first. For him, giving animals a new start is the most meaningful work.
