You may often hear about the dangers of too much sun. However, getting the right amount of sunlight is actually very good for your health. It helps your body and mind in many important ways.
First of all, sunlight helps our bodies make vitamin D. This vitamin is very important for strong bones because it helps us use calcium from food. Vitamin D also helps keep our immune (免疫的) system strong and supports a healthy heart and brain. We call it the “sunshine vitamin” because sunlight is the best way to get it.
Besides vitamin D, sunlight has other benefits. It can make us feel happier and improve our sleep. In the morning, bright light helps set our body’s natural clock. This tells our body when to be awake and when to feel sleepy at night. Sunlight can even help clean the air inside our homes by reducing bacteria (细菌) in dust.
Doctors also believe sunlight may help lower high blood pressure and keep our weight healthy. While more research is needed, we know that people who spend time outside in the sun often feel better and more active. It is important, though, to enjoy the sun safely.
The right amount of time in the sun is different for everyone. People with lighter skin may need about 10 to 15 minutes a day. Those with darker skin might need a little longer, about 25 to 40 minutes. Remember to use sunscreen if you stay outside for more than a short time. By enjoying sunlight wisely, we can all receive its wonderful health gifts.
