During the Spring Festival holiday, the Siberian Tiger Park in Harbin received a large number of visitors. Many tourists enjoyed feeding the tigers, but too much food caused health risks for the big cats. To solve this problem, the park started a special “light-fasting” plan.
The park is home to more than 300 Siberian tigers, and about 200 live in the free-range areas. Siberian tigers are critically endangered animals. The park plays an important role in protecting and studying them.
There are 13 free-range areas in the park. Under the new rule, one area is chosen as a light-fasting zone each day. Visitors cannot feed meat to the tigers there. The other areas still allow feeding. This policy (政策) lasts from February 1 to March 31.
Huang Haitao from the park said that overfeeding can harm the tigers’ digestive (消化的) systems and weaken their hunting ability. The light-fasting plan helps the tigers return to healthy eating habits. The park uses signs, bus broadcasts (播送) and workers’ guidance to tell visitors about the rule.
