A student team from the School of Food Science and Technology has successfully turned their creative “healthy steamed buns” into real business. Four of these special buns were sold for 30,000 yuan, which has attracted wide attention. This success is not just about money, but about turning knowledge into practice.
The product, named Four Seasons Fragrance, was developed by student Ding Yichen and his team. It won first prize at the 5th Hubei Catering and Food Innovation Competition last November. Later, Wuhan Jinkang Catering Management Company liked it so much that they bought the project at the end of 2025.
These buns are beautifully designed with four famous flowers: orchid, lotus, chrysanthemum and plum. They follow the traditional Chinese idea that food and medicine share the same source. Each kind has healthy fillings: orchid buns (兰花包) with wormwood to keep warm; lotus buns to help digestion (消化); chrysanthemum buns to nourish the body; and plum buns with Chinese yam to protect the stomach.
The team spent three weeks doing many experiments. They carefully controlled temperature and time, and solved many problems, such as beautiful shapes, no filling leaks (泄露) and stable colors. They tasted many failed examples and asked classmates for advice.
