10岁小科学家与蝴蝶的记忆秘密(语法填空)

At the age of 10, Jo Nagai did an experiment that surprised scientists all over the world. He raised and trained swallowtail caterpillars (燕尾蝶幼虫) at home, and he ___1___ (prove) that butterflies can keep the memories they formed when they were caterpillars, even after they change ___2___ (complete) into butterflies.

The change from a caterpillar to a butterfly is called metamorphosis (变形). It is one of the most amazing ___3___ (change) in nature. Inside the chrysalis (蛹), a caterpillar almost melts and builds itself again, ___4___ (become) a totally different creature. People always thought that all memories would ___5___ (lose) during this process, but Jo’s experiment showed a different result.

In his experiment, Jo trained the caterpillars to connect a special smell with an ___6___ (pleasant) experience. Later, after the caterpillars turned into butterflies, he tested if they still reacted ___7___ that smell. Surprisingly, many butterflies avoided it. This showed that memories from the caterpillar stage can stay ___8___ they become butterflies.

Jo didn’t stop there. He did the experiment again and tested the ___9___ (two) generation of butterflies. He wanted to see if they also avoided the smell their parents hated. A few ___10___ (month) later, he found that these young butterflies also kept the memory and avoided the smell. This finding tells us that some life experiences can influence the next generation.
