消失百年巨龟重返弗洛雷纳岛

Two hundred years ago, giant tortoises lived on Floreana Island in the Galápagos. In the mid-1800s, people hunted them, and soon there were no tortoises left on the island.

Now, they are back. In February, a newspaper reported that nearly 160 young giant tortoises were set free on Floreana Island. These tortoises are relatives of the ones that lived there long ago.

Scientists worked hard for years to make this happen. In 2008, they found some tortoises with Floreana family ties on a nearby island. From these tortoises, scientists raised new ones that are very close to the original Floreana kind.

These young tortoises were born and grew up in a safe place. Then, they were released into the wild on Floreana Island.
