A young man born in the 1990s named Lin Yu has won wide praise online for cleaning up the dirty ditches (沟渠) in his village. His simple but touching videos have been viewed more than 3 million times, surprising many people.
When Lin Yu returned to his hometown, the rainy season came. The village ditches had been left uncared for years. They were full of thick mud and rubbish, so rainwater could not run away properly. As a result, the fields nearby were flooded, and villagers had to walk through muddy pools. It was especially dangerous for the elderly and children, who might easily fall down.
Seeing the trouble of the villagers, Lin Yu decided to take action. He had learned some basic knowledge about water projects, so he offered to clean the ditches. At first, many villagers doubted him. They thought he had lived in the city for too long to do such hard work. However, Lin Yu proved them wrong with his action.
The work was really tiring. The ditches were narrow and slippery, with mud up to his knees. In hot summers, he was wet all over with sweat and mud. In cold winters, his hands turned red and even grew blisters (水疱). Lin Yu started working before 6 o’clock every morning to avoid influencing villagers’ daily life. He kept working until evening, spending at least eight hours each day. He never complained or showed off, but kept digging and cleaning the ditches patiently.
