Cátia Chien is the illustrator (插图画家) of Fireworks, written by Matthew Burgess. This book won this year’s Caldecott Medal — an award for the greatest picture book for children.
When Cátia was young, she didn’t know she would become an artist. She loved drawing as a child, but she started to work as an artist many years later. She once took a course in painting small insects. Later, she studied drawing in an art college and finished her lessons well.
Cátia believes an artist’s style keeps growing with life experiences. Great art comes not only from basic skills, but also from personal stories and life struggles. She loves drawing kids, animals and trees most, for they are full of fun and natural beauty.
When choosing book projects, Cátia cares more about the story instead of the writer. She believes perfect picture books need great words and warm pictures. For the book Fireworks, she added her own sweet childhood memories to show kids’ inner world.
