
Labor Day is celebrated on May 1st every year. It is a public holiday to honor workers and their great contributions to the country. Labor Day in China comes from the international labor movement (运动) in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
In 1890, the first Labor Day was celebrated after it was named International Workers’ Day in Paris. This date was to remember a protest (抗议) in Chicago in 1886. In China, May 1st was first celebrated as Labor Day in 1920. After the People’s Republic of China was founded in 1949, May 1st was officially made a national holiday.
