A new law has been passed in the UK to create a “smoke-free generation”. According to the law, anyone born on or after January 1, 2009 will never be allowed to buy cigarettes in their life. Shops that sell tobacco to these young people will break the rules.
The government hopes this will keep young people away from smoking. Smoking is one of the biggest reasons for illness and early death in the country. The law also gives ministers more power to control the taste and looks of tobacco and e-cigarette products.
There are new rules for e-cigarettes, too. Using e-cigarettes will be banned in cars when children are inside, and also in playgrounds and near schools and hospitals. However, people can still use them outside hospitals to help them quit smoking. These bans do not cover outdoor places like pub gardens, beaches, or people’s own homes.
Health minister Wes Streeting said, “Stopping illness early is better than treating it later. This change will save lives and make Britain healthier.”
Some people worry about the possible problems for small shops. But the government says it is working hand in hand with shop owners. Health groups have welcomed the law and called for more support to help smokers quit.
