巧手织百毯,温情护新生

Eliz Sandalls, a kind woman living in Ilkley, England, has finished her 100th handmadeblanket for newborn babies, achieving a heartwarming milestone (里程碑). These colorful blankets are sent to the local hospital, where they have become precious gifts for new mothers and their babies.

What moves people most is that Eliz is blind. She lost sight in her right eye in 1987, and the vision in her left eye deteriorated over the years. Luckily, she received an eye operation in 2023, which preserved (保留) part of her eyesight and enabled her to continue her favorite hobby — crocheting (钩编). Though her sight remains limited, she feels deeply thankful to the hospital and her doctor.

After her husband passed away, Eliz moved to Ilkley to live near her daughter in 2021. Since then, crocheting has become her greatest joy and emotional support. Unable to read ordinary books due to poor eyesight, she finds that making blankets gives her life meaning. It takes her nearly three days to finish a small blanket by hand. She spends her own money buying wool, and her care home (疗养院) also offers some help.

Hospital nurses are greatly amazed by her wonderful work. New mothers are all pleased to receive these soft blankets, which warm baby beds and brighten the whole hospital. To show their sincere thanks, nurses paid a special visit to Eliz’s care home and brought her nice gifts.

As she has no grandchildren of her own, Eliz gains great happiness and a strong sense of satisfaction from this meaningful activity. She believes it is wonderful to give back to the community. Even with vision difficulties, she has decided to keep making warm blankets and will never give up this labor of love.
