China successfully launched the Shenzhou-23 manned spaceship at 11:08 p.m. on Sunday at Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center. Carried by a powerful Long March-2F rocket, the spacecraft lifted off on time and flew smoothly towards China’s Tiangong space station.
After a smooth 3.5-hour orbital (轨道的) flight, it successfully completed automatic docking (对接) with the Tianhe core module at 2:45 a.m. Monday. The three taikonauts safely walked out of the return capsule and entered the space station. At 5:13 a.m., the Shenzhou-21 crew opened the cabin hatch (舱口) and warmly greeted the new arrivals. The two teams exchanged greetings, hugged each other and took a warm group photo, sharing the good news with the whole nation. This marks the eighth historic space reunion of Chinese taikonauts, and it also sets a new record as the first time a Hong Kong taikonaut serves in Tiangong.
The two crews will finish full in-orbit rotation and handover work in the following days. The new team will carry out over 100 scientific research projects covering space life science, advanced materials, space medicine and new space technologies. One member will take part in a pioneering one-year space stay experiment to collect key data and improve long-term spaceflight support systems. Everything is going well, showing great achievements and bright future of China’s space exploration cause.
