When you go to the village of Maoyingzi, Anhui Province before the sun sets, you can see old people dance to the disco(迪斯科) music.
Wang Ruizhi, an 84-year-old, says disco dancing plays an important part in her life and she can’t live without it now. In fact, she wasn’t interested in it until a 27-year-old villager, Wang Mingle, asked if she wanted to have a try.
Like most young people in the village, Wang left the village to find good jobs. After working in Beijing for over ten years, he decided to go home. He now works as a driver. One day, when he finished his work, he saw old people sitting by their doorsteps(门阶) in a daze. “After they finish farm work, they can’t even find a person to talk to because most of their children have moved to big cities. Then I began thinking about what I could do for them to make them feel less lonely,” said Wang. In 2020, Wang came up with the idea of organizing dances for old people in the village and recording them on the Internet.
“At first, they were very bashful and felt nervous and uncomfortable when dancing,” said Wang, “But I asked them to help me to make a short video, they agreed.”
As more and more old people in the village joined the dance party, the music grew louder.
